Casa Sabarigo is a one-of-a-kind escape in the middle of the rustic Portuguese countryside, tucked away in its own little valley surrounded by forest.
Colourful, characterful and bohemian throughout (one of the owners is an artist), Casa Sabarigo invites you to slow down, get back to nature and enjoy a little space from the rest of the world.
The house is surrounded by wild gardens designed with bees in mind, with walks straight from the doorstep and wild swimming just a short drive away. It isn't unusual to spot deer or wild boar wandering nearby, and the whole place feels wonderfully removed from everyday life.
The house:
Casa Sabarigo sleeps up to six people.
The principal bedroom has a comfortable queen-size bed, air conditioning and its own WC and shower. There is a second double bedroom with air conditioning, plus a double bed on the mezzanine above the family room.
The mezzanine has a lovely treehouse feel, overlooking the family room, with a skylight that fills the space with light.
Please note: the mezzanine is accessed by steep stairs and is not suitable for young children or less able-bodied adults.
The house is rustic, charming and bohemian rather than polished or overly “done”. It has plenty of character, but also everything you need for a comfortable longer stay — including WiFi, and 4G/5G coverage across most of the property.
There is a bathroom downstairs with a bath heated by solar power, while the principal bedroom has its own shower and WC.
And the drinking water? Delicious. It comes from an underground spring at the base of the valley.
Kitchen & living
The kitchen has a gas hob and oven, hot plates for quick meals, toaster oven, toaster and dishwasher.
There's also a wood-fired Aga-style stove in the dining room. It works, although these days it's more of a novelty for high days and holidays than the main cooking appliance.
Downstairs has underfloor heating, making the house wonderfully cosy whatever the weather.
The spacious family room boasts two sofas, a wood burning fireplace and large smart TV.
There is a washing machine and dryer in the annex.
Outside
The large walled courtyard has a covered outdoor dining area, complete with a traditional Portuguese bread oven — perfect for long lunches and dinners outside if the weather is suitable.
At the bottom of the garden is the large swimming pool, with its handmade cabana and plenty of space around it to relax.
Please note: from October to May, the pool is normally hibernating. It can be put into operation during these months for an additional charge.
Completely away from it all:
Casa Sabarigo is the only house in the valley.
There is approximately 1km of bumpy dirt track to reach the house, so a sturdy car is recommended. Once you're here, though, it feels completely removed from civilisation.
And yet you're not really that far from everything you need.
At the end of the dirt road is a charming traditional café/restaurant, while the nearest town (Pedrogao Grande) is around 10 minutes away by car, with two food shops, several restaurants, wild swimming and a wonderfully nostalgic reservoir.
Coimbra and Tomar are both about an hour away, Porto and Lisbon are 2 hours by car.
In summer, the reservoir comes alive with food trucks, a community atmosphere and, occasionally, some seriously good 80s music.
A place to switch off — or get things done
Casa Sabarigo is somewhere to breathe, sleep deeply, work quietly, read, paint, cook, walk, swim and generally remember what really matters.
Whether you're looking for a peaceful base to work remotely for a few months, somewhere to reconnect with nature, or simply a place to escape the noise of everyday life, Casa Sabarigo has a way of getting under your skin.
Everyone who has stayed or visited seems to fall a little under her spell.
Perhaps you will too.

Every time you rent through Flatio, you're automatically covered by our StayProtection package.
By booking this property, you'll also enjoy extended protection in the form of Stay Benefits - a unique offering backed by AXA! Here's what such packaging includes:
Once you send a booking request, the host is notified that you are interested in their listing. From that moment, they have 24 hours to approve or reject your booking.
Hosts are mainly interested in the profile of their guest. Do not forget to fill in all necessary information, add your profile picture, or even make a short video about yourself. Doing that will make you more attractive for the owner and your booking will more likely get approved.
You can take a look at the contract in advance and online with every listing. After you sign it, you will find it in the application My Housing.
While arranging a contract on Flatio, you do not have to worry that it could be disadvantageous for you. Our contracts are made so that we avoid all problems! All of them are the same, used by all the hosts on Flatio.
Your time is precious. That's why we've added a virtual tour option to our platform so you can see some of the rentals listed on Flatio from the comfort of your own home.
If a virtual tour isn't available for the accommodation you've chosen, you can contact the host and ask them if they're willing to give you a personal tour of the rental unit.
How you can cancel a booking varies depending on what stage the booking is in.
Is your booking request still waiting for host approval? Then you can simply cancel it directly from your My Housing web app!
However, suppose the owner has already approved your booking request, and you are no longer interested in it. In that case, you can still cancel the booking before you sign the lease agreement. Just consider that you should do this only in essential cases. Because when the host accepts your booking, the property is stopped being advertised, and they can lose the chance to rent their property to someone else.
Do you have an approved booking and also a valid agreement? In order to cancel your booking, contact Flatio customer support well in advance of your contract beginning (the specific time and amount of refund depends on the type of cancelation policy).
